Labuschagne Left Out from Australia's One-Day International Squad Versus Team India
Marnus Labuschagne has been dropped from Australia's three-game ODI series versus India, with in-form Queensland colleague Matt Renshaw getting a shock call-up.
Performance Issues Lead to Exclusion
Labuschagne has been omitted from the one-day international team following being dismissed for one in both of his innings during the recent series against South Africa in August. The right-hander has a best innings of 47 in his previous ten ODI batting appearances.
The 31-year-old has featured in 68 one-day internationals and scored 1,871 ODI runs at an average of 34.64 runs per dismissal, but will now continue to press his claims a Test team comeback in time for the Ashes starting in Perth on November 21.
Renshaw's Return and Team Changes
There have been indications of a return to form with a score of 160 for Queensland in the Sheffield Shield this week, while Renshaw scored a century for the Bulls in the same game against Tasmania.
Renshaw could to make his first white-ball appearance in the upcoming series against India after his last inclusion in an ODI squad in 2022.
Renshaw has played 14 Tests with the most recent appearance in India in 2023 but is also seeking a Test return as Australia look for a answer to their opening batting issues.
Pace Additions and Injury News
Fast bowler Mitchell Starc is back for the ODI series against India after having time off since performing well for Australia in the whitewash of West Indies in July.
Big Bash star Mitch Owen might get his ODI debut after being concussed in the lead up to Australia’s last 50-over series against South Africa.
ODI captain Pat Cummins is still unavailable as he works to regain fitness from a back injury in time to captain Australia in the opening Test of the Ashes in November.
Squad Selection Approach and Fixtures
Australia have selected a squad for only the initial two T20 matches against India with the upcoming Ashes series, although Glenn Maxwell will miss all of the five-game T20 series due to a wrist injury suffered in New Zealand.
Mitch Marsh will captain both the ODI and T20 teams after scoring a hundred in the last match against New Zealand to clinch a 2-0 series win last week.
“We have named a squad for the ODI series and first two games of the T20 series as there will be player management through the back end of the series as players get ready for the cricket season through domestic first-class matches,” selection chief George Bailey said.
“The majority of the T20 squad will remain together as it’s an crucial phase in the build towards the World Cup next year, however we are aiming to find equilibrium to ensure we simultaneously get ready certain individuals for the Test series ahead.”
Australia’s three-game ODI series against India begins on 19 October in Perth, before the opponents play five T20s from 29 October.
